Being a Serial Entrepreneur
As a serial entrepreneur, I’ve owned several businesses over my adult life. The very first job I ever had, in fact, was knocking on my neighbor’s doors and painting their house numbers on their curbs. Spring would find me with two cans of spray paint in my bike basket – one of black, and one of reflective white. I’d have my trusty stencils and a wire brush, and I made $5 for every house. It was pretty a pretty lucrative business for a 10 year old in 1981. I did that for a few years until I got my first “real” job – a paper route for the now-defunct Times-Herald.
Not only have I owned my own businesses, I’ve been an employee and a subcontractor many times as well. Trust me, you can’t be a good business owner without having had at least one terrible boss in your resume. Having been through some bad employment experiences has made me a much better business owner.
Live music and live events has always been my calling in life, and I’ve been an audio and live events professional since I was 18 years old. In Depth Events, founded with my business partner (and fellow Star Trek aficionado) Matt Spencer is the culmination of many years of experience, great ideas, and many, many mistakes.
One of the best things about being a business owner is being able to help people that really need it. I’ve been in a position to change the lives of the people who work for me on many occasions. With some people, it was getting their driver’s license back after years of warrants and avoiding the law. With some people, it was training they needed to move on and become successful at other companies. With some, it was just giving them a job when no one else would.
Have there been times when I was taken advantage of? Sure. But I mean it when I say that the few people who fooled me were worth the people I was able to help. It’s like the hokey pokey – that’s what it’s all about.
